Nietzsche and Religion Friedrich Nietzsche is infamous for saying that “God is dead!” He also asserted that we had killed God. Nietzsche further claimed that God’s only excuse is that he doesn’t exist, that what has been done in the name of God is a crime against humanity, and that there was only one Christian, and he died on the cross. Nietzsche’s views of religion are provocative and deceptively complex. What do we mean when we accuse our enemies of being “evil”?
Are metaphysics and religion hallucinations? Does truth kill? In this course we traverse Nietzsche’s writings to find out just what he thought about religion, whether this is born out by other studies of religion, and whether there is any applicability to Nietzsche’s views of religion today. Supplementary material includes readings in Buddhism, psychoanalysis, and the study of terrorism.
