Robin May Schott (ed.): Birth, Death and Femininity: Philosophies of Embodiment

Indiana University Press, October 2010, 266 p.

Two chapters contributed to the book by Sigridur Thorgeirsdottir offer a novel intepretation of Nietzsche‘s conceptions of birth and of the natal self. Nietzsche´s philosophy of birth is here interpreted on the basis of his philosophy of life, but Nietzsche emphasized birth, and modified the emphasis on death as a definitive philosophical moment, as for example prevalent in the philosophical tradition ranging from Socrates to Heidegger. In her interpretation of natal self, Thorgeirsdottir also reflects on commonalities and differences in Nietzsche´s and Hannah Arendt´s philosophies of natality.
